The apple tree is part of the rose family. Found mostly in the Northern Hemisphere. Takes about 5-7 years from seed, to produce apples.

Can grow to 10m.

Cherry 

Prunus


Family Rosaceae

​

Lawson Cherry, Cherry Plum, Wild Cherry, Winter Flowering Cherry, Japanese Cherry. They are small trees that can live 20+ years.

All of these pretty trees can be found in Rothbury.

The national emblem, the Oak is common in southern and central England.

​

Can grow up to 40m.

Introduced in 1560, often planted in parks and gardens. Sometimes called 'Golden Rain' because of the beautiful flowers.

This is a fast growing everygreen conifer which can reach 40m and can live for up to 1000 years.

The leaves are like needles and are pointed, with fine, white speckled lines and a rich sweet smell.

Decidious broadleaf tree which can grow to 25.  Similar to English and Sessile oaks, but the leaves are more pointed. Beautiful red leaves in the autumn. Can live for 500 years.

Broadleaf trees which can grow to 35m and can live for 400 years.

​

Native to central, eastern and southern Europe, introduced to the UK by the Romans (possibly). The seed is very fertile and these trees are easy to grow.

A medium-sized, deciduous tree that can reach 30m. 

​

Silver birch is monecious, male and female flowers (catkins) found on the same tree. Male are long, yellow brown, female short and bright green.

In Rothbury, we have Common Yews, Irish/Fastigiate Yews.

Mature trees can grow to 20m. They are not considered ancient until they reach 900 years old.
They are dioecious, male and female flowers grow on separate trees.
